Archery at XIX Commonwealth Games 2010
The bow seems to have been invented in the late Paleolithic or early Mesolithic. Classical civilizations, notably the Persians, Parthians, Indians, Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese fielded large numbers of archers in their armies. Archery was highly developed in all parts of Asia.
From the 1920s, professional engineers took an interest in archery, previously the exclusive field of traditional craft experts. They led the commercial development of new forms of bow including the modern re-curve and compound bow.
Archery for men was an event for the first time in the modern Olympics in 1900. The first archery event for women was in 1904. However, it was dropped but returned as an Olympic sport in 1972 Munich Games.
Archery was introduced to the Commonwealth Games in 1982 at Brisbane CW Games. However, in consequent games it was dropped, as it was an Optional sport. Nevertheless, for the second time it has been included in the Delhi Commonwealth Games.
